Christian Apologetics: The Affirmative Defense of Faith
Teacher:Herb
Kalkitis
Christian saints have been defending their faith and
debunking the fallacies of their foes through the use of their God given
rationality and the discipline of logical reasoning ever since the Apostolic
era.Do faith and reason conflict?Does God exist? Is the Bible just a collection of myths? How can a “good” God allow evil to
exist? Was Jesus more than a man?Is there life after death? Are miracles “real”?Was Jesus raised from the dead?Is Christianity the only “true” religion?
In this course we will spend the first semester learning the
traditional arguments against the Christian faith and the rational defenses
that defeat those arguments.During the
second semester we will learn of the rational foundations for basic Christian
doctrines through the words of the Church's first great apologist, St.
Augustine of Hippo, by study of his defense of Christianity in“The City of
God”.
Fair warning, this course is reading and reasoning intensive.Students will be tested on their reading
assignments and their understanding of what they read. They will be expected to both attack and
defend their understandings during class discussion.Suggested summer reading: “The City of
God” which can be downloaded in free PDF format from http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf102.html

today's commentators as well as all those in-between.
