In order to succeed in upper level math and science classes, it is imperative that each student possess a fluency in basic mathematics that must be well-grounded in the elementary grades and completed during the 7th and 8th grades .... before the student begins Algebra 1.
With this in mind, we are requiring that each new student take a suggested placement test. This will be offered during the weeks following registration. It is to be completed before June 1st of 2012 to ensure there is enough time to find a summer program for those who might be struggling in what they wish to take in the fall.
Math Fundamentals 1 (5-6)
This 34 week course is designed to prepare your 5th or 6th grader for Math Fundamentals II and further math classes. Our course of study will be based on the Shelby County Schools recommended 6th grade math pacing guide that was developed in alignment with the TN curriculum standards. These standards include Mathematical Processes, Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry & Measurement, and Data Analysis, Statistics & Probability.

PreAlgebra (7-8)
PreAlgebra, the crucial foundation course for all future high school and college math, comprises 23% of the entire math section of the ACT, which is why it is vital for students to master all the PreAlgebra concepts. Algebra 1, the first level of high school math, can be considered a challenging, rigorous course, and it is; however, our students have the benefit of class instruction and a separate day of tutorial support all within one week. All Upper Level Math Courses focus on skill development, conceptual understanding, and an overarching "fluency" in math that is critical for success in higher education, future career opportunities, and daily family life. We want all students to recognize the relevance of and become competent in math at a higher level. Daily/weekly assignments will come from the workbook and self-checking online supplements.
